FIELD TRIP: PLANT SYSTEMATICS PRACTICUM 2025

On November 10, 2025, third-semester Biology students from the Faculty of Science and Technology, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, participated in a Plant Systematics field trip to Padjadjaran University (UNPAD) and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). This trip was part of their Plant Systematics course and commemorated National Love for Flowers and Wildlife Day on November 5, showing their commitment to Indonesia's biodiversity.

The activity began with a visit to the Jatinangoriense Herbarium and Arboretum at Padjadjaran University. At this location, students received a firsthand explanation of the techniques used to create and preserve herbarium specimens, as well as the opportunity to directly observe a diverse collection of tropical plants that serve as important learning materials in the study of plant systematics. In addition, students also explored the arboretum area to understand its important role in conservation and botanical research.

Next, the group of students continued their visit to the Bandungense Herbarium at the Bandung Institute of Technology. Here, students gained valuable experience in scientific collection management, taxonomic documentation, and the function of herbaria as centers for biodiversity data and scientific research.

Through this activity, students are expected to strengthen their understanding of plant identification, classification, and taxonomic principles, while also fostering a sense of concern for the preservation of Indonesia's biodiversity. This activity serves as a form of contextual learning that combines theory and field practice, while broadening students understanding of the important role of herbaria and arboretums in the development of plant biology.

The Biology Study Program, Faculty of Science and Technology, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, would like to express its appreciation and gratitude to Prof. Dr. Budi Irawan, S.Si., M.Si., Head of the Biology Department, FMIPA, Padjadjaran University, and a lecturer who has provided a wealth of knowledge about herbaria and scientific collections, for his warm welcome and support during the visit. Gratitude was also extended to Mr. Arifin Surya Dwipa Irsyam, S.Si., M.Si., as Curator of the Bandungense Herbarium at ITB, and Mr. Ganjar Cahyadi, S.Si., as Curator of the Zoology Museum at ITB, for their guidance, explanations, and facilities provided during the activity. We would also like to express our deep appreciation to all UNPAD Master of Biology students who assisted the students in the field, ensuring that the 2025 Plant Systematics Field Trip Practicum ran smoothly, interactively, and meaningfully.

May this activity inspire and contribute tangibly to students understanding and dedication to the science of plant systematics and the conservation of Indonesia's biodiversity.
