On Wednesday, October 29, 2025, a Seminar was held by the Biology Study Program with Prof. Dr. Ing. Widodo Setiyo Pranowo, S.T., M.Si. from BRIN as the speaker, with the title Nature-Based Solutions for Sustainable Ecosystem Protection.
Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) generally address ecosystem-based interventions to address social and environmental challenges:
- Utilizing ecological processes
- Enhancing biodiversity and being adaptive, sustainable, and economical, and
- Prioritizing three pillars: social, environmental, and economic
The main pillars of Nature-Based Solutions include protection, restoration, and sustainable management and a hybrid approach.

Applications in coastal areas include:
- Mangrove belts
- Coral gardening
- Seagrass meadows, and
- Coastal wetlands
Technologies supporting Nature-Based Solutions include drone mapping, HF radar (typically provided by BMKG), underwater photogrammetry and remote sensing, and GIS.
Benefits:
- Nature-Based Solutions are more affordable and sustainable
- Improve the welfare of coastal communities, and
- Adaptive to climate change

Some examples of NBS activities include combining artificial structures and Nature-Based Solutions for coastal protection:
- Mangroves + permeable breakwaters
- Artificial reefs + natural coral reefs
- Vegetated dunes + revetments
- Wetland buffers + sea dike
