HERPETOLOGY (HERPING) IN THE MOUNT GEDE PANGRANGO NATIONAL PARK AREA

On November 14-15, 2025, a group of students taking a herpetology course conducted a Herpetology Field Trip (Herping) in the Mount Gede Pangrango National Park area. This activity was an important part of the Herpetology course, as an effort to get to know the diversity of herpetofauna in their natural habitat more closely.

Over the course of a two-day activity, the students conducted two observations, one at night and one in the morning, in two forest blocks, namely Cinakimun Block and Lebak Bumi Ciherang (LBC) Block. These two locations were chosen because of their ecological circumstances, which are believed to be very conducive to the existence of various herpetofauna.

The observations were carried out using the Visual Encounter Survey (VES), a direct survey method that allows students to identify animals along the observation route visually.

Using this approach, students documented the species found, the quantity of individuals, the type and location of the habitat, and the environmental conditions (temperature, pH, humidity).

Data collection was essential for the Mount Gede Pangrango National Park area species diversity inventory, and it also helped the students improve their accuracy and observational abilities.
